How are ball bearings assembled?

Ball bearings are very common in our daily life, but do you know how are ball bearings assembled? You might have wondered how anything could be made that perfect. It's actually a pretty neat process that starts with a metal wire and ends with a perfect shiny ball.
The first stage of the process is a cold or hot forming operation. The diameter of the wire is approximated to the diameter of the finished ball and passes through the boring machine. The machine has a hemispherical metal cavity on each side. It suddenly turned off the wire, forcing the metal piece into a spherical shape. This process leaves a metal ring (called a "flash") around the ball, so the ball coming out of this machine looks like Saturn.
Next, the balls enter the machine to remove the flash. The machine rolls the ball between two very heavy hardened steel plates (called drilled plates).
One orifice plate is stationary, and the other is rotating. The plate has grooves machined into it, which guide the ball in a circular path. You will see a part of one of the boards cut off. This is where the ball enters and leaves the groove. When the machine is running, the groove is completely filled with balls. After the ball passes through the groove, it will fall into the opening of the board and roll for a while before entering another groove. By ensuring that the balls pass through many different grooves, even if there is a difference between the grooves, all the balls will come out of the machine and have the same size.
When the ball passes through the groove, it spins and tumbles, the rough edges are broken, and the ball is squeezed into a spherical shape, just like rolling dough between hands. This squeeze of the ball compresses the metal, making the surface of the ball very hard. Since the balls are metal, this operation generates a lot of heat, so water will be poured on the balls and the plate to cool the balls.
In this process, the variables are the pressure to squeeze the plates together, the speed of rotation of the plates and the residence time of the ball in the machine. Setting these variables correctly will always produce the correct size ball.
After this operation, the balls can be heat treated. This will harden the ball, but it will also change its size. The size of the bearing ball must be perfect, sometimes within one millionth of an inch, so some other operations are required after heat treatment.
The ball then goes through the grinding operation. Use the same type of machine, but this time the coolant contains abrasives. The ball passes through the groove again and is ground and compressed to its final size.
Finally, the ball goes through a grinding operation. Again, the same type of machine is used, but this time the board is made of softer metal, and the machine uses much less pressure to squeeze the boards together. In addition, the machine uses polishing paste instead of abrasives. This process gives the ball a perfectly smooth and shiny surface without removing any other materials.
The final step in the process is inspection. The balls are measured with very precise machinery to determine whether they meet the required tolerances. For example, the Anti-friction Bearing Manufacturers Association (AFBMA) has a set of bearing ball grades. The third grade ball must be spherical within three millionths of an inch, and the diameter must be accurate within three millionths of an inch. This means that for a three-quarter inch ball, the diameter must be between 0.24997 and 0.25003 inches, and the minimum diameter measured on the ball must be within three millionths of the maximum diameter.
